The water in the slough is 50° F. 4 feet below the surface which is much warmer. The Turtles spend a lot of time in the sun.

It's comforting watching them on their endless search; mostly solitary until a target is spotted the remainder of the flock emerges from seemingly no-where. There may be a scant few or flocks as large as 20 and more. They are beautiful animals performing an important service in the environment keeping the grounds clean.
The entire herd, or sounder if they are a group of grown Hogs, will not hesitate to take down what they percieve as a threat. One is dangerous a sounder multiplies it as many times as there are animals.
The various states Departments of Fish and Game encourages hunting them to curb the population, however it backfired. It didn't work out as hoped because the hunters themselves became a problem.
