Summer has Settled in.
I’m settled in for the Summer, chin strap fastened, air purifier filters stocked up and my smoke mask ready; it will be a fine fire season Summer.

Hawks; Instinct or Learned?
They may merely imitate the parents while they are hunting with the goal of a meal, how much is instinct?

A White Tailed Kite; and A Hawk.
I chase these two Hawks all over the place, they are every bit the neighbors as the humans. As a matter of fact the neighbors know them as well, people talk about them.

25 mph wind, 3 birds are out.
The big birds act like kites once they put tail to the wind and adjust their wing trim. Hawks will turn into the wind, hover for a considerable amount of time then dive for a meal. But today it was just the Hummingbirds, one Vulture and a lone Hawk. After these storms pass the sun will shine and the sky will fill with every bird around the Slough.

It’s Quiet and Foggy.
This is the second Hawk of the day, this taken just after 12 noon during the brightest part of the day. They all look pretty much alike but the bird above appears to be a bit darker than the others.

It’s the Way Things Go; Then A Hawk Shows Up.
I am out here all the time, this bird has seen me for years in my garden she has flown extremely close to me. I don’t know if they grow familiar to people as Crows do, not to tarnish my ego but she may be looking beyond me at a mouse or something. I just may not matter to her, man that hurts.

I’m back in operation.
Hawks are difficult to identify, when they are perched as this one is the tear drop shaped feathers on the breast are the identifier I go by. This Coopers Hawk appears in the photo much larger than he is in real life. He’s just over one foot tall, size is no measuring standard these guy’s are critters to be reckoned with.

That Squirrel.
I’m thinking tomorrow morning of leaving her in the house; the Bunnies, Turkeys, Skunks, and Squirrels would be much relieved. That’s not to mention the rest of the birds, haven’t any of these guys learned anything from evoloution?

Rain, Vultures and Hawks
I did not witness the encounter, terra-firma is 14 feet below the Levee’s top, whatever the bird was diving for was surprised to say the least. My reflexes have lost a bit, the Hawk caught me by surprise again. My excuse is “man that guy flies fast.” Laughing is allowed, I sure do a lot, at my own expense.

A New Problem; Ground Squirrels.
I am wildly off tract with this blog, but it all does have to do with Ground Squirrels, in this case I’m happy for two things the first; he’s on the far side of the water. Second there appears to be one of them; I’m surprised the Coyotes and Hawks have not gotten him yet.
